Hello, friends and family!
Please indulge me for a moment, I would like to ask you to think about something. Keep in mind that I am not the sort of person to send along annoying unwanted forwarded emails or to text everyone in my address book every time I feel happy (or sad, or frustrated, or...). Today, however, I need to ask you to think about an issue close to me.
You may have heard of the UN's Treaty on the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This international treaty has been ratified by all other members of the UN except the US, with the exception of Somalia. At first it sounds great: protect kids. On closer examination, however, a number of disturbing possibilities pop up. Let me just give you a couple of them: 1) In the US, international treaty is legally binding at the federal level. This means that if the CRC is ratified by the US, then this treaty will overrule all previous state and federal laws regarding parenting and children--this is completely opposed to the whole concept of representational government!
2) Putting decision-making power into the hands of the UN means taking it away from parents. I hate to be jaded or cynical, but can we really trust the UN or even our own federal government to know what's in the best interests of our children? Shouldn't that be a parent's job? When it comes to education, you may be quite satisfied with how the government is doing, but what happens if the government decides to make medical decisions for your child? What happens if they decide what type of sex education is right for your child? What about who decides what religion is right for your child?
Please take a minute to visit parentalrights.org, and learn a little bit about this issue. It might not seem like a very important issue, but I think it's worth considering.
Thanks
